BMW iX3: A New Era of Electric Style and Performance
The BMW iX3 marks a pivotal shift for the German automaker, ushering in a new design language and a commitment to electric mobility. Built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform, this all-electric SUV reimagines the BMW experience, offering a blend of modern aesthetics, advanced technology, and impressive performance.
Redefining BMW’s Design Language
At 478 cm in length, the iX3 is a striking vehicle that departs significantly from its petrol and diesel X3 counterpart. It doesn’t share a single component with its internal combustion engine sibling, instead inaugurating a style that will define BMW’s future lineup. The front of the iX3 is particularly noteworthy, presenting a tall and massive profile that subtly echoes BMWs of the 1960s and 70s. A small, vertical grille replaces the larger, square designs seen on current models, creating a more streamlined and contemporary appearance.
Original design elements, such as headlights hidden under transparent elements with distinctive “double blade” daytime running lights, seamlessly connect to the grille. The sides boast a dynamic flow, enhanced by flush-integrated door handles and subtly rounded wheel arches. The rear draws inspiration from the larger iX, featuring expansive headlights, a sloping rear window, and a sporty bumper insert.
A Minimalist and Sustainable Interior
Stepping inside the iX3 reveals an interior focused on essential shapes and clean lines. The cabin is crafted with soft, largely recycled materials, emphasizing sustainability without compromising luxury. The minimalist aesthetic extends to the almost complete absence of physical buttons, replaced by a sophisticated digital interface.
The centerpiece is BMW’s “Panoramic Vision” digital dashboard, a sweeping display that extends from one pillar to the other. This immersive screen offers a three-dimensional effect and is fully customizable, allowing passengers to select and drag information – such as external temperature, weather, altitude, or navigation directions – onto the 17.9″ central touchscreen with the fluidity of a smartphone.
A large head-up display with a 3D effect further enhances the driving experience, though it’s included in the expensive €1,950 Innovation package alongside a Harman Kardon hi-fi system and three-zone climate control. While the central display offers comprehensive control, some functions, like lumbar support adjustment, feel unnecessarily complicated. Minor drawbacks include less comfortable ceiling handles and limited front seat belt height adjustment.
Spacious Comfort and Practicality
The iX3 doesn’t compromise on space. The rear seats are large and enveloping, offering precise electrical adjustments, ventilation, and heating. A flat floor ensures ample legroom for the center passenger. The trunk provides a generous 520 liters of capacity with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,750 liters when folded – matching the capacity of the larger BMW iX. An additional 58-liter storage compartment under the front hood provides space for charging cables.
Performance and Driving Dynamics
The iX3 50xDrive, currently the sole available model, boasts a 108.7 kWh battery, dual electric motors (one front, one rear), all-wheel drive, and a total output of 469 HP. This translates to a top speed of 210 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.
In typical driving conditions, the iX3 delivers a comfortable and relaxing experience, effectively isolating passengers from road imperfections. The “B” position on the steering stalk maximizes energy recovery and activates a one-pedal driving function, allowing drivers to slow down and stop without using the brake pedal.
Level 3 Autonomy and Future-Proof Technology
The iX3 offers Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, though access requires the optional Highway Assistant (€1,100 for a four-year subscription). Currently available in Germany and soon expanding to other European countries, including Italy, this system allows for hands-free driving on highways, enabling the car to handle overtaking and other maneuvers. Testing on Spanish motorways demonstrated the system’s responsiveness and ability to react to traffic situations without hesitation, instilling a sense of security and relaxation. The car utilizes cameras, radar, and sensors to “see” surrounding vehicles and maintain safe speeds.
Impressive Range and Charging Capabilities
Beyond its autonomous features, the iX3 excels in range and charging. BMW claims an average range of 805 km on a single charge, with real-world testing suggesting at least 650 km is achievable. This impressive range is thanks to the large 108.7 kWh lithium battery, featuring new cylindrical cells that promise 20% more energy density compared to traditional prism-shaped cells.
Charging is equally impressive. Utilizing a super-fast 400 kW charging station, the iX3 can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 21 minutes, adding over 350 km of range in just 10 minutes. Charging from a standard 11 kW alternating current outlet takes around 11 hours.
Pricing and Availability
The BMW iX3 50xDrive starts at €69,900, with the MSport trim priced at €73,700 and the MSport Pro model, as tested, at €76,400. Standard equipment includes 20″ alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, full LED headlights, a navigation system, the Panoramic Vision dashboard, semi-autonomous driving features, wireless smartphone charging, electrically adjustable and ventilated seats, and a rear-view camera.
