The BNP had announced a simultaneous ‘national unity rally and march’ in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka last Friday (July 19) to protest against the attack and killing of students on the peaceful movement of students demanding quota reform. However, the party’s leaders and activists could not go to that area due to police obstruction. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was arrested from there around 12 noon.
Apart from this, BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, central leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury and Gana Odhikar Parishad convener Nurul Haque Noor were arrested.
BNP Chairperson’s advisor Aman Ullah Aman, central leader Barrister Nasir Uddin Asim, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zobair, Shibir’s former president Rashedul Islam and more than a hundred activists were arrested from Dhaka.
On Friday (July 19) night, the court granted five-day remand to six persons including Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mia Golam Parwar in the case of Rampura police station in the capital on charges of attack, vandalism and arson at BTV building.
The other defendants remanded in this case are BNP’s publicity secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, BNP’s organizing secretary Kazi Sayedul Alam Babul, Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP member secretary Aminul Haque, Bagerhat district BNP president MA Salam and BNP supporters. Mahmudus Salehin
Last Sunday (July 21), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sheikh Sadi’s court granted the remand. BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury were granted three-day remand in the same case.
Apart from this, the court granted a five-day remand to the president of the Public Rights Council and former VP of Daksu Nurul Haque Noor, who was arrested in the case of Banani police station of the capital in connection with the vandalism, arson, theft and beating of the bridge building in Banani of the capital.
In a statement on Monday (July 22), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that by imposing a curfew in the country, the government has put the law and order forces in front of the people and has thrown the people into extreme suffering. Although BNP leaders and workers have no involvement in the anti-quota movement, the leaders of the party are being harassed by making fictitious allegations. Not only that, extreme torture is being done to the arrested leaders and activists on remand. The general secretary of BNP also said that there is a scary situation in the country now.
