Bob Marley was born today: The reggae legend who “wrote” his own history

by time news

Marley, in 1976, left Jamaica and settled in England, where he recorded the albums ‘Exodus’ and ‘Kaya’

His full name was Nesta Robert Marley and was born in the small village of Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica.

His father was a sailor and white Jamaican, of English descent, and his mother was Jamaican. He lived with his mother, since his father was constantly traveling. After his father’s death he and his mother moved to Kingston. There Marley befriended Neville “Bunny” Livingston, later known as Bunny Wailer, and began playing music.

At the age of only fourteen he left school and began working as an apprentice in a blacksmith shop. In his spare time, he and Livingston played music with Joe Higgs, a local singer who had converted to Rastafarianism and is considered by many to be Marley’s mentor. It was at one such gathering with Higgs and Livingston that Marley met Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh), with whom they shared musical aspirations.

In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, “Judge Not” and “One Cup of Coffee,” with a local producer, Leslie Kong. The songs were released by the Beverley label under the pseudonym Bobby Martel, attracting little interest. The same songs were re-released on a posthumous compilation with Marley’s work, Songs of Freedom.
