After a series of deadly Ukrainian strikes, the Russian region of Belgorod, bordering Ukraine, announced Thursday to extend school holidays in certain schools. Likewise, local authorities have recommended universities to teach remotely. Rightly so since, a few hours after these announcements, the city was the target of a new series of Ukrainian bombings at the end of the day. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said at least two people were injured in this latest bombing, as Telegram channels broadcast what appeared to be footage of damaged cars in the city.

“I report the decisions that have been taken: to extend the school holidays from January 9 to 19” in municipalities, notably the city of Belgorod, the regional capital of some 360,000 inhabitants, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram. “In technical colleges and universities located in these municipalities, it is recommended to hold remote sessions. If necessary, extend the vacation,” he added.

Belgorod, target of Ukrainian bombings

If the governor did not specify the reasons for this decision, his region – already regularly targeted – has been the target of large-scale bombings by Ukrainian forces in recent days. One of these strikes targeting Belgorod on Saturday left 25 dead and more than a hundred injured. The city was also attacked Tuesday evening by four waves of Ukrainian missiles, which left one dead and eleven injured.

These new strikes come in a more than tense context. At the same time, Moscow has been carrying out massive attacks for several days which have left dozens dead and injured. At least four people were killed in bombings in eastern and central Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities announced Thursday.

In the Kirovograd region (in central Ukraine), a Russian missile attack “on an industrial installation” left one dead and “eight injured” in Kropyvnytskiï, Governor Andriï Raikovych said on Telegram. The national operator Ukrenergo admitted in a press release that one of its infrastructures had been “damaged”.
