Bondi Beach Shooting: At Least 12 Dead in Suspected Targeted Attack During Hanukkah Celebration

A tragic shooting near a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has left at least 12 people dead and 29 injured, including two police officers. Authorities have locked down the area amid a suspected bomb threat and are urging the public to stay away.

According to reports from ABC News, the incident unfolded on Sunday evening as a “Chanukah by the Sea” event was underway. One alleged shooter was killed at the scene, while another remains in critical condition after being taken into custody. Nine of the deceased were civilians.

Scene of the Attack: Bondi Park Playground

The shooting occurred at the northern end of Bondi Beach, specifically near the Bondi Park Playground. The “Chanukah by the Sea” event, scheduled to begin at 5 pm, had already commenced when the attack took place. Sunday marked the first day of Chanukah, also known as Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of lights.

Investigation Underway: Motive Remains Unclear

Police are currently investigating the nature and motive of the attack, and have not yet confirmed whether the Jewish gathering was the intended target. A senior official stated that “an extensive crime scene has been established and inquiries are now underway.” Authorities have confirmed there are no reports of related incidents elsewhere in Sydney.

Bomb Threat and Police Response

NSW Police discovered “a number of suspicious items” at the scene, which are being examined by specialist officers, as reported by The Guardian. An exclusion zone has been established, and bomb disposal teams are working to neutralize the suspected device.

Government Condemnation and Response

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “shocking and distressing.” He affirmed, “We are working with the NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.”

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns delivered a stark assessment, stating in a press conference that the attack appeared to be targeted at the Sydney Jewish community. “What should have been a night of peace and joy celebrated in that community with families and supporters, has been shattered by this horrifying evil attack,” Minns said. He added, “Our heart bleeds for Australia’s Jewish community tonight. I can only imagine the pain that they’re feeling right now to see their loved ones killed as they celebrate this ancient holiday.”

A police press conference is scheduled for 9:30 pm local time, where further details are expected to be released. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to understand the full scope of this devastating event.
