Bondi beach Shooting: Bystander Disarms Gunman During Hanukkah Terror Attack

A heroic bystander intervened during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, wrestling a firearm from one of the alleged attackers as at least 12 people were killed and 29 others hospitalized. Authorities have declared the incident a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
A harrowing scene unfolded on Saturday as a gunman opened fire near the Bondi Pavilion during a Hanukkah celebration. Footage of the event shows the alleged assailant, armed with a shotgun, firing into a crowd before being confronted by a civilian who bravely charged and disarmed him.
Heroic Intervention Stops Further Violence
The bystander, initially crouching behind a parked vehicle, swiftly moved to engage the gunman as shots rang out. Witnesses described a physical struggle, culminating in the civilian wresting the shotgun from the attacker’s grasp. The video circulating online depicts the alleged gunman falling to the ground, followed by the bystander pointing the weapon at him before safely placing it against a tree and raising his hands.
“We have seen Australians today run towards danger in order to help others,” stated the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, at a press conference on Sunday night. “These australians are heroes and their bravery has saved lives.”
Identifying the Hero: Ahmed, a Local Fruit Shop Owner
Seven News has identified the intervening civilian as Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner from the Sutherland Shire. A family member, speaking outside a sydney hospital, confirmed Ahmed had been shot twice during the confrontation but is expected to recover.
“The doctor [said] he’s OK, and the next two hours, they let us to go in and see Ahmed,” the family member shared. “He do the operation, but we hope he will be fine. He is a hero, 100%, he’s a hero.”
Targeted Attack on Jewish Community
Authorities have classified the attack as a targeted act of terrorism against the Jewish community, occurring on the first day of Hanukkah. The New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, condemned the “fainthearted act of terrifying violence” and emphasized the importance of supporting the affected community.
“This cowardly act of terrifying violence is shocking and painful to see, and represents some of our worst fears about terrorism in Sydney,” Minns told reporters. “What should have been a night of peace and joy celebrated in that community with families and supporters, has been shattered by this horrifying evil attack.”
Ongoing Investigation and Casualties
New South Wales police confirmed that one of the deceased is believed to be one of the two gunmen involved in the attack.The second alleged shooter remains in critical condition. Investigators are also exploring the possibility of a third shooter. Among the injured are two police officers.
