Catalonia Launches Annual Blood Donor Marathon to Combat Post-Holiday Shortages

Catalonia’s Blood and Tissue Bank (BST) has initiated its annual Blood Donor Marathon, a critical campaign aimed at replenishing blood supplies following the typical decline in donations during the Christmas season. Running from January 8th to 17th, the initiative will encompass over 100 municipalities through 101 mobile donation drives, supplementing existing fixed locations at hospital centers.

A Community United by Altruism

This year’s campaign, unfolding under the motto “The bond that makes us immense” in Tarragona, emphasizes the profound community impact of blood donation. Organizers highlight that each donation creates a vital, unseen connection between individuals throughout the region. This tradition, gaining momentum as a cornerstone of Catalan public health programming, underscores the power of collective altruism.

“Each contribution transcends the individual,” a senior official stated, emphasizing the campaign’s focus on shared responsibility and solidarity.

Illuminating the Call to Action

A striking visual element of the marathon is the planned illumination of over 100 emblematic buildings across Catalonia with red light on Saturday, January 10th. This symbolic gesture aims to amplify the call for donations and demonstrate widespread support. In Tarragona, residents will be able to view the red illumination on City Hall and the Kesse Youth Space.

The launch event, held last Wednesday, brought together the mayors of Catalonia’s four major cities. Rubén Viñuales, the mayor of Tarragona, alongside Albert Soley, head of the Blood Bank in Tarragona, and Carlos García, an active blood donor, detailed the local aspects of the project.

Meeting Critical Healthcare Needs

Looking ahead to 2026, healthcare officials anticipate that over 70,000 hospitalized patients in Catalonia will require blood transfusions or blood derivatives like plasma and platelets. To meet this demand, approximately 240,000 annual blood donations are necessary – a consistent figure that requires sustained effort to maintain adequate supply.

Specific data reveals the critical role of blood transfusions in treating various conditions:

  • Oncology: More than one-third (34%) of transfusions are administered to cancer patients.
  • Digestive Pathologies: 15.5% of transfusions support individuals with digestive disorders.
  • Cardiovascular Diseases: Another significant 12.3% of transfusions are for patients with heart conditions.

The aging population is also influencing demand, with the average recipient now around 73 years old, representing 56.6% of all patients. A growing segment of recipients are over 80, now accounting for 32% of those receiving blood products.

How to Participate

Individuals interested in donating blood can schedule an appointment online at www.bancsang.net/donar or by calling 935573566. Advance reservations will help streamline the donation process during the week-long intensive campaign.

Donation points in Tarragona include Joan XXIII University Hospital, CAP Jaume I (January 12th, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.), and The Miracle school (January 13th, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.). The Blood Donor Marathon represents a vital lifeline for patients across Catalonia, and organizers are urging eligible individuals to participate in this life-saving initiative.
