Gaming Industry Faces Boycott Xbox Pledge Over Microsoft’s Alleged complicity in Gaza Conflict

A growing movement within the video game industry is calling for a boycott of xbox, accusing Microsoft of providing technological support to the Israeli military amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The collective, No Games For Genocide, launched a pledge on December 2, 2025, urging gamers, developers, streamers, and journalists to participate in the Palestinian-led BDS (boycott, divest, sanction) movement.

The call to action comes despite Microsoft’s recent decision to cut off cloud services to a specific israel Defense Forces intelligence unit reportedly used for mass surveillance of Palestinians. Though, the collective argues that Microsoft continues to supply services to the broader Israeli military, making it complicit in alleged war crimes.

“The games industry in particular is at the intersection of entertainment and tech, and there are a lot of material links-when we’re looking at the tech aspect of hardware and software-there are a lot of connections between the games industry and the genocide that Israel is committing against the Palestinian people,” explained a key organizer with No Games For genocide, during a recent interview.”A few of us really wanted to organize around that, and organize people within the industry to say ‘we don’t want these ties’ and find a way to move past them.”

A United Front: unions and Activists Organize

The effort is spearheaded by No Games For Genocide, a coalition of video game workers and union organizers, and is gaining traction within the industry. The group was co-founded by Sara Khan, a content creator and cofounder of Game Assist, an organization that provides mutual aid to marginalized game developers. “we’re seeing a lot of people who are really scared to speak out, and that’s completely understandable,” one organizer noted. “This is definitely more long-term work.”

The pledge has already garnered support from prominent figures and organizations within the gaming community, including the investigative YouTube channel People Make Games and the worker-owned game studio soft, Not Weak. Organizers emphasize the importance of “collective power,” drawing parallels to union organizing as a means of mitigating individual risk.”There is only so much we can do as individuals. There’s so much more we can do as a collective.”

Microsoft’s Response and the Broader Context

The boycott comes amidst ongoing scrutiny of Microsoft’s involvement in the region. While the company announced in september 2025 that it had “ceased and disabled a set of services to a unit within the Israel Ministry of Defense,” the BDS movement argues that this action is insufficient.

“Microsoft remains a key technological pillar in Israel’s apartheid regime and its genocide in Gaza,” read a statement from the BDS National Committee. “It continues to equip the Israeli military, government, and prisons with the technology used to commit war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.”

Khan further emphasized that Microsoft’s alleged complicity extends beyond the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, encompassing broader issues of “genocide and imperialism taking place in the global south.” She also pointed to a 2023 petition calling on The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley to acknowledge the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which was reportedly ignored.

The organizers of No Games For Genocide maintain that a ceasefire alone is not enough, arguing for a fundamental questioning of the “very existence of a settler colonial state” and a commitment to “decolonization for the Palestinian people.” Their long-term goal is to pressure Microsoft into divesting from technologies used in the conflict.

In response to a request for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company “treats claims about our technology seriously” and reiterated their ongoing review of the allegations, linking to the September 2025 blog post detailing the termination of services to the IDF unit. The spokesperson also highlighted a new “Microsoft integrity Port” established for employees to report ethical concerns.

The boycott pledge represents a significant escalation of political activism within the gaming industry, signaling a growing willingness among workers and consumers to leverage their influence to address global conflicts and demand corporate accountability.
