Promising Nutraceutical Combo Shows Potential to ‘Heal’ Aggressive Brain Cancer
A groundbreaking new study suggests a path forward in cancer treatment that focuses not on destruction, but on healing, offering a potential low-cost alternative to existing therapies.
For decades, cancer treatment has largely centered around attacking and eliminating cancerous cells through methods like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. However, a growing number of researchers are questioning whether this approach is truly comprehensive. What if the key to a cure lies in coaxing cancer cells to revert to a healthy state? This provocative idea is at the heart of research led by Professor Indraneel Mittra at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Mumbai, India.
The concept of cancer as a wound that fails to heal isn’t entirely new. As early as 1986, Dr. Harold Dvorak proposed in the New England Journal of Medicine that cancer shares significant biological similarities with chronic wounds. Professor Mittra builds on this idea, arguing that medicine should explore methods to guide tumors toward a less aggressive, healed state, rather than solely focusing on their destruction.
Recent research from Professor Mittra’s team indicates that a simple combination of two readily available and inexpensive nutraceuticals may facilitate this healing process, particularly in the case of glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of brain cancer.
The Challenge of Glioblastoma
Glioblastoma is characterized by its rapid growth and aggressive nature. Despite advancements in modern treatments – including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, used in various combinations – the median survival rate for patients remains a disheartening 15 months. This grim statistic underscores the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies.
A Novel Approach: Resveratrol and Copper
Published in BJC Reports, the new study involved ten patients diagnosed with glioblastoma. These patients were instructed to take a tablet containing small amounts of resveratrol and copper four times daily for an average of 11.6 days leading up to scheduled brain surgery. A control group of ten patients with similarly aggressive tumors did not receive the nutraceutical combination.
During surgery, tissue samples were collected from both groups and subjected to rigorous analysis, including microscopy, immune-staining, immunofluorescence, and transcriptome analysis, to identify any differences in tumor biology. The results revealed a striking impact of the resveratrol and copper treatment.
Dramatic Shifts in Tumor Biology
The analysis of tumor samples revealed several key changes in patients who received the nutraceutical tablets:
- Levels of Ki-67, a protein widely used as an indicator of cancer cell division, were nearly one-third lower in treated tumors compared to untreated ones, suggesting reduced cancer growth.
- Biomarkers associated with nine major “hallmarks of cancer” were present in 57% fewer cells in the treated samples.
- Levels of six immune checkpoints, proteins that can prevent the immune system from attacking cancer cells, were, on average, 41% lower in treated tumors.
- Three markers linked to cancer stem cells – which contribute to tumor spread and treatment resistance – were 56% lower in the treated group.
Notably, patients taking the resveratrol and copper tablets experienced no discernible side effects.
“These results suggest that a simple, inexpensive and non-toxic nutraceutical tablet potentially has the power to heal glioblastoma,” Professor Mittra stated.
Targeting Cell-Free Chromatin Particles
The mechanism behind this apparent healing process centers on the interaction of resveratrol and copper with cell-free chromatin particles (cfChPs). These fragments of DNA are released from dying cancer cells and can exacerbate the disease by promoting inflammation and aggressive behavior in surviving cancer cells.
Previous research from Professor Mittra’s group demonstrated that combining resveratrol and copper generates oxygen radicals that can deactivate or destroy cfChPs. In the current study, researchers found that cfChPs were abundant in tissue from untreated tumors but were almost completely absent in tissue from patients who received the nutraceutical tablets. This suggests that the treatment facilitated the removal of dead cancer cells through apoptosis, a controlled cell death process, preventing the release of cfChPs into the surrounding environment.
As Professor Mittra explains, “The cell-free chromatin particles, fragments of DNA released by dying cancer cells, inflame the surviving cancer cells. This makes the disease more aggressive. If you eliminate the cell-free chromatin, which is what the resveratrol-copper tablets do, the cancer is subdued.” He posits that prolonged use of this approach could potentially lead to complete healing, transforming a malignant tumor into a benign one.
A Low-Cost Alternative to Immune Checkpoint Inhibition
The study also revealed a significant reduction in the activity of several immune checkpoints following treatment with resveratrol and copper. Immune checkpoint inhibition is a relatively new cancer therapy that unleashes the immune system to attack tumors, but current drugs are often prohibitively expensive and can cause substantial side effects.
The nutraceutical combination used in this study offers a potentially more accessible alternative, demonstrating the ability to downregulate multiple immune checkpoints without the associated toxicity or cost. This raises the possibility of influencing the same pathways targeted by expensive cancer drugs through a simpler, more affordable means.
A Paradigm Shift in Cancer Treatment?
These observations suggest a potential shift in the approach to cancer treatment. “We have been trying to kill cancer cells for 2,500 years, since the time of the ancient Greeks, without success,” Professor Mittra remarked. “Maybe it is time to look at cancer treatment differently and work towards healing tumors, rather than annihilating them.”
While acknowledging the small sample size of the study, Professor Mittra expressed confidence that the striking results would be replicated in larger trials. “I believe that we may be on the brink of transforming the way cancer is treated.”
