The Federal Police is taking action against unauthorized entry with stationary controls at the border with Poland, for example. The head of the Conference of Interior Ministers considers this to be indispensable for a long time to come.

Brandenburg’s Interior Minister and Chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers Michael Stübgen considers stationary border controls to limit unauthorized entry to be necessary for two to three years. “Unfortunately, I don’t see any other option at the moment and that’s why we will unfortunately have to get used to it over a period of two to three years,” said the CDU politician to the German Press Agency in Potsdam. Because the asylum reform in the EU takes years to be implemented and have an effect. In the future, there should be uniform procedures at the EU’s external borders to curb irregular migration.

In October, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered temporary stationary border controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. They have since been extended several times and are scheduled to continue until at least March 15th. Stübgen said he assumed that Faeser would now extend the controls for six months. There have been permanent border controls at the land border between Germany and Austria since autumn 2015.

Border controls reduce the number of refugees by 80 percent

“We will not solve the migration problem just with returns,” said Stübgen. The key is to reduce the number of uncontrolled accesses. The stationary border controls have already been successful and have resulted in a reduction of around 80 percent in the number of refugees.

The municipalities will only feel relief in a few months, when the transfers from the initial reception to the municipalities will also be lower due to the lower number of refugees, said Stübgen. They currently still have to accommodate those people who arrived by mid-October – i.e. before the introduction of border controls.
