With the advancement of judicial decisions considered abusive in Brazil, freedom of expression in the country began to be called into question, being the target of concern on the part of society and the organizers of the Index on Censorship project, in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University ( LJMU).

Founded in 1972, the Index on Censorship aims to “map and bring to light violations of freedom of expression” in different countries around the world, maintaining an updated ranking of nations.

Brazil now appears on the list, being classified as a nation where the freedom to express oneself is “restricted”. Through social media, public figures lamented the country’s current condition, highlighting the need for a reaction from the National Congress.

“Brazil is already on the list where freedom of expression is restricted. Proof of this is the STF, Loola [sic] and Flávio Dino who want to regulate the internet at all costs”, commented pastor and writer Renato Vargens.

He added: “I think that if the Federal Senate does not take a position giving limits to the Supreme Court, the tendency is to see freedom of expression being suppressed more and more.”

Sonaira Fernandes, Women’s Secretary of São Paulo, in the Tarcísio de Freitas government, also commented on Brazil’s listing on the Index on Censorshipremembering that a Bill being processed in Congress could make the situation even worse.

“Freedom of expression in Brazil is going downhill even before the Censorship Bill advances in Congress. We cannot allow measures that further restrict freedom of expression to advance!”, posted the Secretary.

Sonaira’s followers reacted to the publication, with many pointing out the result of the presidential election in 2022 as a mistake by voters. “Towards communism in Brazil, I will love to see when the leftists wake up and the circus turns against them”, wrote one internet user. He checks out:
