The Brazilian government issued a note this Friday (29) calling for the resumption of dialogue in negotiations between Venezuela and Essequibo. The territory of Guyana is the target of dispute over oil.

The statement comes after Venezuela announced that it will send troops to the border region with Essequibo. The deployment of military personnel to the location is a response to an announcement from the United Kingdom, which stated that it will send a military ship to the coast of Guyana.

“Brazil calls on the parties to contain themselves, to return to dialogue and to respect the spirit and letter of the Argyle Declaration”, says the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, referring to the agreement that the two countries reached on the 14th. from December.

“The Brazilian government believes that military demonstrations of support for any party should be avoided, so that the ongoing dialogue process can produce results”, highlights the Brazilian government.

Reason for dispute

The conflict over the Essequibo region dates back to the 19th century, during the process of creating Guyana. It was in 2015, however, that the situation returned to the agenda when the American oil company ExxonMobil began exploring the region. The area is rich in oil after the company found several reserves.

It is estimated that there are reserves of 11 billion barrels of oil, the majority of which is in the Essequibo region.

Since then, Guyana has emerged in the exploration of oil deposits, changing the local economy. Last year alone, the country’s economy grew 62%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), representing the highest rate in the world.

Venezuela accuses ExxonMobil not only of exploiting disputed territory, but also of being used by the United States to encourage a local conflict.
