A woman was arrested in Rio de Janeiro after trying to obtain a bank loan for a man she was transporting in a wheelchair and who turned out to be dead, Brazilian Police reported this Wednesday (04/17/2024).

Bank branch staff alerted emergency services after they found it suspicious that the woman requested a loan in the name of the elderly person in the wheelchair, the force said in a statement. Upon arriving at the scene, medical personnel “confirmed death,” the note says.

The Bangu Police, in western Rio, arrested the woman for attempted robbery by fraud and desecration of a corpse, the source said. Investigative teams are trying to determine how and when the 68-year-old man died.

Brazilian media reported that the woman claimed to be the man’s niece and tried to obtain a loan of 17,000 reais (about $3,250) in his name.

“She tried to pretend that he was signing the papers, (but) he was already dead when he entered the bank,” the head of the local investigation, Fabio Luiz, told the G1 news site. The woman’s lawyer denied the allegations.
