Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, 23, was crowned world champion in all-around gymnastics on Thursday in Liverpool. Andrade, Olympic vice-champion of the event in Tokyo, finished the contest with a total of 56.899 points and beat American Shilese Jones (55.399 pts) and Briton Jessica Gadirova (55.199 pts).
In the absence of superstar Simone Biles, who has put her career on hold, Rebeca Andrade is increasingly establishing herself as the new face of global gymnastics. With her vault title, she became the first Brazilian to win Olympic gold in gymnastics last year. She had confirmed three months later with the world title on this apparatus. She won the second world gold medal. In Liverpool, she will have three more medal chances in the apparatus finals on Saturday.
