A Growing Movement As 2005
The Noumean OPT walk has grown exponentially since its inception in 2005, starting with just 81 participants and reaching a peak of 5,200 in 2024.This year’s event saw 5,000 women complete the 1.4 km walk, each wearing the signature pink T-shirt symbolizing solidarity and hope.
The event’s expanded format included a village featuring 23 exhibitors and a stage hosting two musical groups, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for participants and supporters.
Meaningful Funds Raised for Cancer League
This year’s walk generated 5.6 million francs, all of which will be donated to the League against Cancer to bolster their ongoing efforts in combating the disease. “Its a total success, women have appropriated this event,” stated the president of the Noumean OPT section of the ASPTT (Sports association of Posts, Telegraphs and Phones), who has organized the event for the past five years.
He further emphasized the importance of maintaining the walk as a women-focused event, stating, “each year, we are asked to open this walk to men, but we want it to remain entirely female, to highlight these women who fight against breast cancer.”
Breast Cancer Prevalence in New Caledonia
The walk’s significance is underscored by the high incidence of breast cancer in New Caledonia. According to the Directorate of Health and Social Affairs (DASS), one in ten Caledonian women will develop the disease during her lifetime. alarmingly, 28% of diagnoses occur in women under the age of 50.
Early detection remains crucial,with a five-year survival rate of 88% following diagnosis. Nationally, Public Health France reported over 61,000 new cases of breast cancer discovered in 2023, highlighting the continued need for research, awareness, and accessible healthcare.
