Damage Assessment underway with 3D Tunnel Scan

A decision on temporary traffic regulations hinges on a thorough examination of the damage. ASFINAG press spokesman Alexander Holzedl explained, “As already steadfast in the first assessment, there is very massive damage in the first 120 meters of the tunnel. Due to the damage, we have now had or are carrying out a 3D tunnel scan in the tunnel. This is a three-dimensional representation of the inside of the tunnel to be able to see the deformations after the fire in detail.”

“Conversely,we are currently taking drill cores from the inside of the tunnel. These are material samples in order to be able to determine the extent of the damage in the tunnel. These investigations are essential in order to gain insight into how extensive the damage is in the structure of the tunnel,” Holzedl added.

ASFINAG anticipates releasing more concrete data regarding the next steps by Monday evening.
