Crisis between producers and distributors, elimination of tax rebates, soaring production costs… The Cameroonian brewing sector seems on the verge of implosion. To the point that certain players no longer hesitate to demand a general increase in prices to save this pillar of the national industry. Analysis.

Beer could soon cost more in Cameroon. Faced with the difficulties which are accumulating and threatening the economic survival of brewing companies, a slogan is becoming more and more pressing: prices must be increased. Explanations.

Breweries on the verge of collapse

Between dizzying increases in production costs, increased tax pressure and deterioration of relations with mass distribution, the situation is becoming untenable for Cameroonian beer and soda producers. In recent days, calls for help have multiplied to warn of the danger of the collapse of an entire section of domestic industry.

Result: more and more voices are now being raised to demand a general increase in consumer prices, the only viable lifeline according to some.

A vital sector for the economy

It must be said that breweries weigh heavily in Cameroon’s trade balance. With its 500 billion annual turnover, the sector generates 400,000 direct and indirect jobs, making it a pillar of the national economy that we cannot afford to let collapse.

Hence the urgency of “shock therapy” in the form of price increases to guarantee the profitability of brewing companies, on the verge of asphyxiation.

Towards beers at 700 FCFA?

It remains to be seen how much prices could increase. If some mention an increase of 100 FCFA per bottle, making the famous “ 33cl » from 600 to 700 FCFA, one thing is certain: it will be up to the producers to lead the way.

Because by threatening a pure and simple cessation of production in the event of the status quo, the brewers have put the public authorities’ backs against the wall. Enough to unblock the tariff impasse as quickly as possible? Consumers will soon know in what sauce they will be eaten…
