London Since Great Britain left the EU, it is not often that the German car manufacturers rush to the location’s aid. However, a clause in the trade agreement concluded after Brexit is now leading to an unusual alliance: the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), together with British manufacturers and the government in London, is pushing for the rules of origin for electric vehicles to be changed.
“The rules of origin for battery-powered vehicles in the trade and cooperation agreement should be quickly adapted to the real conditions and developments in the development of European battery manufacturing capacities,” the VDA demands. Therefore, the current rules of origin would have to be extended until the end of 2026 as a first step.
