Months before her disappearance, she authored an article titled “Crime and Safety in New Haven” for Yale Medical School’s B Magazine, highlighting concerns about security on campus.
The Disappearance and Initial Investigation
On the morning of September 8th,2009,CCTV footage captured Le entering the Yale laboratory at 10:00 AM. This would be the last time she was seen alive. When she failed to return home that evening, her five flatmates alerted authorities, according to the Hartford Courant. Her personal belongings – notebook, handbag, and credit card – were all found undisturbed inside the building.
Initial theories explored the possibility that le had experienced cold feet about her upcoming marriage. Though, investigators were quickly stymied by the fact that the CCTV system showed no record of her leaving the building, which required identification card access for entry and exit.
The investigation took a grim turn on September 12th when bloodied clothing was discovered concealed within the ceiling of the laboratory. By September 13th, police detected a disturbing odor described as “similar to that of a decomposing body,” according to the Yale Daily News, leading to the horrific revelation of Le’s body.
A Gruesome Discovery and the Arrest of Ray Clark
Yale President Richard Levin addressed students with the tragic news: “It is indeed my tragic duty to report that the body of a female was found in the basement of the Amistad Building late this afternoon. The identity of the woman has not yet been established. Law enforcement officials remain on the scene; this is an active investigation, and we hope it is resolved quickly.”
The condition of Le’s body was notably disturbing. “[The killer] just crushed her in there. She was like mush – she was so smashed up you couldn’t recognize her,” a police source told The New york Post.
The investigation ultimately focused on Ray Clark, a lab technician employed by the university. A DNA sample linked him to the crime, leading to his arrest on September 17th.

Clark eventually pleaded guilty to murder and received a 44-year prison sentence.
