Indonesia is prioritizing national food security with plans to establish a dedicated Center for Capture Fisheries Research, a move aimed at substantially increasing the nation’s protein supply. The initiative, announced following a report to President Prabowo Subianto, underscores a commitment to bolstering key agricultural sectors beyond existing successes in staple crops.
Addressing a Critical Protein Gap
Currently, Indonesia has met national production targets for commodities like corn and rice. However, a senior official stated that production of essential protein sources – including chicken, eggs, beef, and fishery products – requires substantial and sustained investment. President Subianto has placed particular emphasis on closing this protein gap to meet the growing demands of the population.
“The President stated that commodities like corn and rice have met national targets. However, the production of protein sources such as chicken, eggs, beef, and fishery products must continue to be increased,” according to a statement released after Monday’s meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
BRIN Leads the charge in innovation
The National research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will spearhead the establishment of the new research center. BRIN Head Arif Satria explained that the agency currently lacks a dedicated facility for capture fisheries research.”Currently, BRIN does not yet have a dedicated center for capture fisheries research. God willing, we will soon establish the Center for Capture Fisheries Research to support the target of increasing protein production,” satria remarked.
The initiative will focus on accelerating both marine and land aquaculture to satisfy domestic consumption and expand export opportunities. this expansion will be supported by a commitment to innovation downstreaming, a process of translating research findings into practical applications.
Strategic Partnerships to Drive Food Self-Sufficiency
BRIN will collaborate with a network of key partners to accelerate this process. These include investment management agency Danantara, state-owned palm oil company Agrinas Palma, state-owned food company Agrinas Pangan, and state-owned fishery company Agrinas Jaladri.
Satria emphasized the importance of ongoing engagement with these “Agrinas” companies, highlighting the need for them to adopt the latest technologies to strengthen food production. This aligns directly with President Subianto’s vision of achieving national food self-sufficiency, a goal he described as “something that must truly be realized.”
Moreover, President Subianto underscored the vital role of research institutions in providing innovative solutions to national challenges. The acceleration of innovation downstreaming will continue through synergy with relevant ministries and several partners.
The establishment of the Center for Capture Fisheries Research represents a significant step towards securing Indonesia’s food future and solidifying its position as a key player in the global protein market.
