The well-known Broadway actress Frances Sternhagen has died at his home in New York at the age of 93, as confirmed by his son, John Carlin, on his Instagram account: «On Monday night, November 27, he died peacefully at home, a month and a half before turning 94,” the text quotes.

«For now I just want to give thanks for the remarkable gift of artist and human being that Frances Sternhagen was. She was loved by many. I am very lucky to be able to call her my mother, my friend, my singing and dancing partner,” says her son.

Sternhagen won two Tony Awards for best dramatic supporting actress. One of them was thanks to her role as Aunt Lavinia in ‘The Heiress’ in 1995 on Broadway and the other was for multiple roles in ‘The Good Doctor’, having been nominated up to five other times.

However, she is best remembered among the public for her roles on the small screen: that of Cliff Clavin’s mother in ‘Cheers‘; Dr. John Carter’s aristocratic grandmother in ‘Emergencies‘ and Trey MacDougal’s mother in ‘Sex in New York‘, according to the British media ‘The Guardian’.

With these roles she was nominated three times for an Emmy: twice with ‘Cheers’ and another with ‘Sex and the City’. She and she appeared in films like ‘Misery’, ‘Bright Lights’ or ‘Big City’, among many others.

According to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, this actress became an expert when it came to embodying brave, authoritarian and eccentric papal. “I have to say, it’s fun to play these snobby older ladies. “It’s always more fun to be unpleasant,” she said in an interview in the ‘Los Angeles Times’.
