April 16 will be the final production of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway after 35 years of screenings
After 35 years on Broadway, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “The Phantom of the Opera” will be closed, the Guardian reports.
The musical will be shown for the last time on Sunday, April 16. The Phantom of the Opera, based on the 1910 novel of the same name by French writer Gaston Leroux, has been on Broadway since 1988.
The production holds an absolute theater record: nearly 14,000 screenings.
The musical, which debuted at Her Majesty’s Theater in London in 1986, was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with the bulk of the lyrics written by Charles Hart with input from Richard Stilgoe.
The Phantom of the Opera is the story of a mysterious, mutilated ghost wandering the Paris Opera who falls in love with the young Christine Daae.
