Western Michigan Hockey Defeats Omaha 4-2, Sets Sights on Minnesota Duluth

The Western Michigan hockey team continued its strong season with a decisive 4-2 victory over Omaha on Saturday night, improving to 9-5-0 overall and 5-3-0 in National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play. The Broncos now turn their attention to a home series against the University of Minnesota Duluth in early December.
OMAHA, Neb. – A dominant performance fueled by strong goaltending and timely scoring propelled the Western Michigan hockey team to a 4-2 win over Omaha at Baxter Arena. Hampton Slukynsky was instrumental in the victory, stopping 27 shots and earning the win for the Brown and Gold.
First Period Dominance
The Broncos came out firing, taking a quick lead just under four minutes into the game. Owen Michaels tipped in a shot from Samuel Sjolund to put Western Michigan ahead 1-0. The offensive pressure continued, with Zaccharya Wisdom extending the lead to 2-0 shortly after, assisted by Cole Spicer, who recorded his first career point as a Bronco. Despite a penalty against Western Michigan, solid defensive play and Slukynsky’s saves kept Omaha off the board. The period concluded with Western Michigan carrying a 2-0 advantage and 56 seconds of power-play time into the second frame.
Building the Lead in the Second
Western Michigan continued to dictate the pace in the second period. Cole Spicer scored his first goal for the Brown and Gold early in the stanza, pushing the lead to 3-0. Slukynsky remained a stalwart in net, denying a series of Omaha attacks. While the Broncos earned another power play, they were unable to capitalize. Omaha finally broke through late in the period, scoring a goal that withstood video review, making the score 3-1 heading into the final period.
Closing Out the Victory
Omaha attempted to mount a comeback with a quick goal in the third period, but the Bronco defense held firm. Opportunities for Western Michigan to extend their lead arose, with shots from Sjolund and Cole Crusberg-Roseen narrowly missing the net. With just over two minutes remaining, Omaha pulled their goaltender in a desperate attempt to tie the game. The Broncos blocked multiple shots and Slukynsky continued his stellar performance. Ultimately, Iiro Hakkarainen sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, assisted by Wisdom and Slukynsky, finalizing the score at 4-2.
Looking Ahead to Minnesota Duluth
The Broncos will enjoy a week off before hosting the University of Minnesota Duluth for a two-game series at Lawson Arena on December 5th and 6th. The series opener is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
