BSE Replaces Wipro in Nifty 50, Triggering $246M Outflow for Wipro, $741M Inflow for BSE - CNBC TV18

Stock exchange BSE Ltd. will join India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index, replacing IT major Wipro Ltd. effective September 30, 2026, according to a semi-annual review notice issued by ndtvprofit.com. The market changes will take effect after trading closes on September 29, 2026, as reported by fortuneindia.com.

The adjustment marks a historic departure for Bengaluru-based Wipro, which has maintained an almost uninterrupted presence in the Nifty 50 since the index’s inception. Wipro experienced a brief exclusion between April and September 2013 following the demerger of its non-IT businesses, but otherwise remained a constituent for nearly three decades, as detailed by cnbctv18.com. Following its removal from the flagship index, Wipro will transition into the Nifty Next 50.

Market Capitalisation and Qualification Metrics

BSE qualified for the blue-chip index after posting a six-month average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 1,40,879 crore (approximately ₹1.40 trillion). Under index methodology, a replacement candidate must achieve a six-month average free-float market capitalisation at least 1.5 times the average of the smallest constituent being removed. Wipro, the smallest constituent exiting the benchmark, recorded a six-month average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 55,930 crore, according to Rediff Money.

Two other prospective candidates—TVS Motor Company, with an average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 84,566 crore, and Divi’s Laboratories, at Rs 82,930 crore—were not selected for inclusion. NSE Indices noted that these firms failed to meet the required 1.5 times threshold relative to the lowest-ranked existing Nifty 50 constituents, such as HDFC Life Insurance Company (Rs 65,666 crore) and Tata Consumer Products (Rs 73,054 crore). Eligibility rules additionally require candidate stocks to be available for trading in the NSE’s futures and options segment.

Financial Impact and Passive Fund Flows

Brokerage estimates indicate that the index rebalancing will trigger substantial institutional portfolio adjustments. According to Zee Business, Nuvama projected passive inflows of approximately $741 million for BSE and passive outflows of around $246 million for Wipro as index-tracking exchange-traded funds and mutual funds rebalance.

Anticipation of the index inclusion drove market activity prior to the official announcement. BSE shares climbed 4.04% to close at ₹3,596.80, while Wipro shares declined 1.29% to ₹185.11 on the National Stock Exchange.

Broad Rejig Across NSE Indices

The index overhaul extends far beyond the Nifty 50, touching multiple broad-market, sectoral, and strategy benchmarks:
