The governing coalition in Bulgaria remains steadfast in its support of the newly drafted budget, asserting that agreements with social partners and the public have been honored. This declaration came from a senior official during a visit to Nikolaevo on December 2, 2025, amid ongoing protests and speculation about potential early elections.
Budget Protection a Key Condition
According to the official, the coalition—led by the “BSP – United Left”– will only reconsider its position within the government if social benefits are not adequately protected within the budget framework. “Everything we have agreed with the social partners and with society is a fact in the new draft budget, so at this stage there is no reason to rethink our participation in governance,” the official stated to journalists. This commitment underscores the coalition’s prioritization of social welfare programs.
Elections Remain a Possibility
When questioned about the possibility of snap elections, the official acknowledged that the topic is frequently discussed within Bulgarian politics. “We are always ready for elections, there is no reason to worry because everything we do is public and for the public,” they said, signaling a level of preparedness despite a preference for continued governance.
Addressing Public Discontent
The official also addressed the recent protests calling for the government’s resignation, stating that the coalition is actively listening to public concerns. “As you can see, most of the things that caused this tension are reflected in the budget,” they noted, suggesting that the government has responded to key demands. Despite the unrest, the official affirmed that a government resignation is “not on the agenda” at this time.
Infrastructure Investments Underway
The visit to Nikolaevo coincided with the commencement of infrastructure projects, including the paving of a central street and the opening of a new water pipe. The official emphasized the importance of stability and predictability for continued investment in the country, highlighting these projects as evidence of ongoing progress. “It is very important to know that for us it is most important that there is stability, predictability and that the investment process in the country does not stop,” they explained.
The coalition’s commitment to the budget and infrastructure development signals a determination to maintain course despite political headwinds and public demonstrations.
