BSW boss Wagenknecht plays into Putin’s hands

Even the right-wing populist AfD is not as radical on the issue as the BSW leader. The co-party leader Alice Weidel called on Ukraine to compensate for the economic damage to Germany. This is pure populism, because Russia’s suspension of gas supplies to Germany has not caused any economic damage anyway. But unlike Wagenknecht, the AfD is not calling on the federal government to let Putin win the war.

Wagenknecht’s and the AfD’s answers are therefore not really helpful in the debate about the Nord Stream explosion. Instead, the focus should now be on waiting for concrete investigation results. Clarification is important and Germany must – if the current evidence is confirmed – hold talks with Poland and Ukraine. There will certainly have to be a German reaction in this case, as such attacks must have consequences. But it must be of fundamental importance for the German government to separate the reaction to the Nord Stream sabotage from the defense against Russian aggression – this is in Germany’s security interest. Because if in doubt, Putin is a much greater threat than a group of divers.
