Budapest’s public transportation system is poised for a significant upgrade with the integration of Apple Pay and Google Pay into the BudapestGO application, eliminating the need for third-party payment processors. The update, scheduled to roll out between late December 15th and early December 16th, aims to provide a more seamless and convenient experience for commuters.
Addressing Past Payment Concerns
The move comes after considerable frustration with the previous payment platform, Simplepay, operated by the OTP group. A senior official expressed relief, stating, “Jesus will come a few days earlier,” highlighting the depth of dissatisfaction with the earlier system and its associated technical difficulties. In September, the official publicly shared a commitment received from the application’s developers to add Apple and Google Pay options in a future update.
Enhanced Features Beyond Payment Options
The update isn’t solely focused on payment methods. Developers are also implementing improvements to the app’s functionality, promising more transparent travel planning and a more intuitive menu structure. According to a company release, the goal is to make purchasing tickets and passes even more convenient for users.
Planned System Downtime
Users should be aware of a planned service interruption during the update process. From 10:00 p.m. on December 15th to 7:00 a.m. on December 16th, purchasing tickets and passes within the application will be unavailable, and the route planning feature may also be temporarily disrupted. All users will be required to log back into the BudapestGO app once the update is complete.
This upgrade represents a significant step forward in modernizing Budapest’s public transportation infrastructure and enhancing the commuter experience.
