USF Football’s Moment Arrives: ESPN “SportsCenter on Campus” Spotlights Rising Program
The University of South Florida football program is experiencing a surge in national attention, culminating in a high-energy broadcast of ESPN’s “SportsCenter on Campus” from the university’s Marshall Student Center on Thursday. The event served as a platform to showcase the team’s recent success and growing fanbase ahead of their nationally televised game against the University of Texas at San Antonio.
A palpable sense of anticipation filled the air as students, alumni, and community members gathered for the broadcast. A sophomore at USF, and a longtime fan, captured the sentiment, stating, “We’ve been waiting for a moment like this, for ESPN to come to our campus and promote our team and our fans. To finally have it feels like a really big deal.”
The event signaled a turning point for the Bulls, a chance to demonstrate they are no longer a program with future potential, but a current force in college football. “USF football has arrived,” declared a USF junior, echoing the growing belief within the university community.
ESPN anchor Matt Barrie acknowledged the program’s ascent, noting that USF “got this attention themselves, getting some upsets in the early part of the year.” He emphasized the significance of the day, calling it “a really big day for the university.” Barrie also expressed optimism about the future, particularly with the planned addition of an on-campus stadium, predicting continued growth in “Bulls fever.”
The energy of the crowd, estimated at around 1,000 fans, mirrored the team’s on-field performance. Currently ranked No. 6 nationally in scoring and No. 7 in total offense, the Bulls are led by quarterback Byrum Brown, who ranks fourth in the nation in both total offense and total points generated. A USF junior commented, “This is great exposure for our team and our campus. As fans, we want to show our support.”
The broadcast also highlighted the university’s connection to the local community. Philanthropist Richard Gonzmart, owner of the iconic Columbia Restaurant, attended with his daughter, a USF graduate, as the broadcast featured the restaurant’s signature dishes – the 1905 Salad, Cuban sandwich, and paella.
Signs held by fans reflected the season’s enthusiasm, with messages declaring support as the team’s “12th man,” proclaiming Brown as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, and expressing unwavering loyalty with the phrase, “Green and Gold ’till I’m Old and Dead.” A junior confidently stated, “The college football world has been watching us. They know we are the next big thing and have the best fans.”
The atmosphere was further enhanced by performances from the USF spirit squads, Rocky the Bull, and the Herd of Thunder band. Fans participated in a pull-up challenge, with a high mark of 27, and enthusiastically greeted university dignitaries. The crowd particularly celebrated Rob Higgins, the first-ever CEO of USF Athletics, chanting his name with the fervor typically reserved for professional wrestling stars.
The broadcast culminated in a live interview with football head coach Alex Golesh, drawing a resounding response from the energized crowd. The event underscored a pivotal moment for USF football, signaling its arrival on the national stage and promising a bright future for the program and its dedicated fanbase.
