China is once again bereaved by a road tragedy. Fourteen people died and 37 others injured in a bus accident in the north of the country, state media reported on Wednesday.
The accident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to state television CCTV, citing authorities in Shanxi province. The vehicle was carrying 51 people and hit the inside wall of a motorway tunnel.
Frequent accidents
The Xinhua news agency confirmed the number of deaths and injuries and indicated that an investigation had been opened to determine the causes of the accident.
Road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety controls. In February 2023, 16 people were killed and dozens of others injured in a pileup in Hunan province. The previous month, 19 people died and 20 injured in the eastern province of Jiangxi after a truck collided with a funeral procession.
