Italian Authorities Investigate Horrific Bus Crash Near Venice That Killed 21 People

Italian authorities are currently investigating the cause of a tragic bus crash near Venice that resulted in the death of at least 21 individuals, including two children. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Mestre and has prompted authorities to describe the scene as “apocalyptic.”

According to a spokesperson for the Italian fire brigade, the cause of the crash has yet to be determined. The 40-year-old bus driver, identified as Alberto Rizzotto, was among the deceased, and 18 others sustained injuries. The bus, which was electric-powered according to the company’s website, was traveling from Venice to Marghera and was reportedly full of people returning home from work.

Italian fire services have considered the possibility that the bus’s battery may have caused the fire to spread more rapidly after overheating. The provincial fire brigade commander, Mauro Lungo, explained that batteries experience critical issues when they overheat. Concerns about the battery reportedly slowed down the rescue operation.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are examining video footage to determine if any other vehicles were involved in the incident or if the driver suffered a health issue. The Venice public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the crash.

Eyewitnesses described the bus as completely going off the road and flying off the bridge, leading to its subsequent collision. The accident occurred on the overpass of a road that connects Mestre to Marghera and the A4 motorway.

Massimo Fiorese, the head of the bus operating company, had seen footage of the moments prior to the crash. The video showed the bus slowing down and appearing almost stationary before crashing through the guardrail and toppling over.

Following the tragedy, the Italian Senate held a minute of silence for the victims, and the country’s president and prime minister expressed their condolences. World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Council Charles Michel, also offered their thoughts and condolences to the Italian people affected by the tragedy.

The investigation into the cause of the bus crash continues as authorities work to determine the factors that led to this devastating incident.
