Florida’s new head coach, Jon Sumrall, has tapped Buster Faulkner to lead the Gators’ offense, poaching the rising star coordinator from Georgia Tech, a source familiar with the matter revealed on Thursday. Faulkner arrives in Gainesville after orchestrating a remarkable turnaround for the Yellow Jackets, guiding them to the nation’s eighth-ranked offense this season.
The hiring signals a clear intent by Sumrall, a coach with a defensive background, to address Florida’s offensive woes. The Gators finished 4-8 in the recently completed season, ranking 12th in the Southeastern Conference in total offense and last in scoring.
From Yellow Jacket Resurgence to Gator Potential
Faulkner’s ascent in the coaching ranks has been swift. Over the past three years, he played a pivotal role in Georgia Tech’s resurgence under head coach Brent Key, transforming a program that previously languished near the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference into a top-25 contender. In 2022, the year Key took over, the Yellow Jackets ranked 115th nationally in yards per play. Under Faulkner’s guidance, that number jumped to 27th the following year, 40th last year, and into the top 20 this season.
This dramatic improvement has not gone unnoticed. Faulkner was recently named one of 15 finalists for the prestigious Broyles Award, recognizing the nation’s top assistant coach. Georgia Tech responded to Faulkner’s success by extending Key’s contract this week, alongside a financial commitment to staff and players.
A “Pro-Style Hybrid” Offense
Faulkner’s offensive philosophy is a complex blend of influences. He has described his system as a “pro-style hybrid,” drawing inspiration from multiple sources. “It’s a lot of pro-style stuff mixed with what you see in high school, what you see in colleges,” Faulkner told The Athletic earlier this summer. “Our passing game is just like the NFL, our terminology is a lot like the NFL. But we have a mix of air raid stuff. And then we also have a big mix of (where) the quarterback run game is a huge part of it.”
His background includes experience with Todd Monken’s offense during his time on the Georgia staff (2020-2022), a run-based system from his high school playing days in Georgia, and the air raid offense he utilized at Valdosta State. These diverse influences suggest a flexible and adaptable approach to offensive design.
The Lagway Project
A key component of Sumrall’s decision to bring in Faulkner appears to be the potential to unlock the talent of DJ Lagway, a former five-star quarterback recruit who endured a challenging sophomore season with the Gators. Lagway led the SEC with 14 interceptions and was 14th in yards per attempt. The hope is that Faulkner can provide the structure and play-calling acumen to help Lagway reach his considerable potential.
Faulkner’s success at Georgia Tech was significantly aided by the arrival of quarterback Haynes King, a “wrecking-ball style” player who rushed for 922 yards – the third-most in the ACC – and ranked third in the conference in yards per attempt. While the situations are different, Faulkner’s track record suggests he can effectively build an offense around a dynamic quarterback.
The challenge for Faulkner now is to replicate that success in the SEC, a conference renowned for its defensive prowess. The Gators’ offense desperately needs a spark, and the hiring of Faulkner represents a bold attempt to provide it.
