Buzelis Suffers Ankle Injury as Bulls Fall to Heat in Lopsided Defeat
The Chicago Bulls endured a challenging night at the United Center, suffering a season-high 41-point loss to the Miami Heat (107-143) alongside an ankle injury to key forward Matas Buzelis.
The game took a concerning turn early in the third quarter when Buzelis, a rising star for the Bulls, sustained an injury while driving to the basket. Fans still settling back into their seats after the halftime break watched as the Lithuanian forward awkwardly landed, requiring assistance from team staff to leave the court.
Buzelis briefly returned to the bench after initial evaluation, even receiving a warm ovation upon re-entering the game. However, it quickly became apparent that the injury was impacting his performance. “Although the injury didn’t stop him from flying on defense and blocking opponents’ shots, on offense, Mr. Buzel lacked the strength in his legs to stand up from the floor when teammate Tre Jones tried to throw him an alley-oop pass,” a witness reported. He also struggled with typically routine shots.
Ultimately, the Bulls announced Buzelis’ night was over due to the ankle injury. Following the game, the 21-year-old underwent treatment and was visibly limping. Despite the setback, Buzelis remained optimistic, stating, “My leg is not bad. It hurts a little, but I think I will play tomorrow,” when speaking with reporters after the match. He clarified that the decision to end his participation wasn’t his own, explaining, “I thought that I could have played. But the coaches told me not to play after that. But the leg is really not bad, for sure.”
In his 19 minutes of play against the Heat, Buzelis recorded 6 points (2/5 from the field, 0/3 from three-point range, and 2/2 from the free-throw line), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocked shots.
The Bulls’ struggles extended beyond Buzelis’ injury. Multiple players were hampered by health issues, with Jalen Terry and Isaac Okoro also sustaining injuries, and Kevin Huerter ejected early in the third quarter due to two technical fouls. Ayo Dosunmu led the Bulls in scoring with 23 points, while Josh Giddey contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Heat were led by Kel’el Ware, who posted 20 points and 14 rebounds, as eight Miami players scored in double figures. Notably, Lithuanian player Kaspars Jakučionis was not in the Heat’s lineup, having recently been assigned to the G League.
The defeat marks the Bulls’ largest margin of loss this season. Despite the setback, the team remains in playoff contention, currently holding the 9th position in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls will look to rebound in their next game against the Washington Wizards. Further comments from Buzelis regarding the start of the season and his role with the Lithuanian national team are expected to be released soon.
