Cadillac Unveils Monochrome Livery for 2026 F1 Car Ahead of Barcelona Test

A striking monochrome livery has been revealed for Cadillac’s inaugural Formula One car, set to be utilized during a private test event in Barcelona later this month. While visually arresting, the American manufacturer confirmed this design will not be the one featured during the 2026 competition season.

Did you know? – Cadillac is entering Formula 1 for the first time in over 40 years, partnering with the Sauber team. The team will be officially known as Stake F1 Team Sauber, powered by Cadillac.

The unique paint scheme, born from a collaboration between the newest F1 team and General Motors Global Design, was showcased at GM’s global headquarters on Tuesday. Cadillac plans to unveil its official race livery during a Super Bowl commercial on February 8th.

“Our new testing livery celebrates Detroit’s design heritage and the power of the global Cadillac formula 1 team, while keeping our design secrets under wraps,” stated Mark Reuss, President of General Motors.”The barcelona test is just the beginning – we can’t wait to share our official race livery with fans around the world next month.”

The Barcelona livery serves a dual purpose, balancing brand promotion with the critical need to obscure aerodynamic details during the crucial preseason advancement phase. as teams prepare for the 2026 season – a year marked by all-new car designs – maintaining competitive secrecy is paramount.

Beyond branding, the livery incorporates a personal element: the names of the team’s founding members are etched into the design. To further enhance camouflage, Cadillac’s livery features a vertical geometric pattern utilizing both gloss and matte finishes.

The design is intentionally bold, even in its monochrome execution. The Cadillac logo dominates the rear portion of the car, strategically positioned, according to a company release, to “disguise the aero surfaces.” This tactic, commonly employed across motorsport, aims to mislead rivals attempting to analyze competitors’ aerodynamic components.

Why did Cadillac create this livery? The monochrome design serves two primary purposes: to promote the Cadillac brand and to conceal the aerodynamic features of the 2026 car during crucial testing. The 2026 season marks a significant regulation change in F1, making aerodynamic secrecy especially significant.

The meaning of this approach is heightened by the complete overhaul of F1 cars for the 2026 season. The closed-door ‘shakedown’ event in Barcelona, scheduled for January 26-30, allows teams to privately test essential car functions before official preseason testing in Bahrain in February. The absence of independant media at the Barcelona test further incentivizes teams to utilize camouflage designs, hindering detailed analysis from photographs taken by team photographers.

Who is involved? Cadillac, in partnership with Sauber, is the team entering Formula 1. General Motors Global Design collaborated on the livery. Key figures include Mark Reuss,President of General Motors, and the founding members of the team whose names are etched into the design.

Pro tip – F1 teams often use camouflage liveries during testing to prevent competitors from gaining insights into their car’s aerodynamic design. This is especially crucial with major regulation changes.

Williams Racing will also participate in the Barcelona event with a unique livery, with plans to reveal its full-season colors on February 3rd. Several other teams are strategically timing their car launches around the Barcelona test, including Aston Martin, hosting its season launch in Saudi Arabia on February 9th, and McLaren, doing the same in Bahrain on the same day.
