The event runs from Feb. 19 through Feb. 21, 2027, bringing elite international winter athletes to Alberta for a massive sports and entertainment festival.
While Whistler, B.C., hosted a core-sport X Games event back in 2003, the Calgary gathering represents the true debut of the winter league format in Canada. Organizers expect roughly 15,000 to 20,000 spectators to fill the venue across the weekend, transforming the city into a global focal point for action sports.

The 2027 event forms part of the newly launched MoonPay X Games League winter season, introducing a team-based championship race alongside traditional individual disciplines. The three-stop circuit begins in Aspen, Colo., moves to Calgary for the second stop, and concludes in Ruka, Finland.
Under the league structure, athletes compete individually for medals while simultaneously accumulating points for one of four coed winter club teams. At a media unveiling, CEO Jeremy Bloom introduced the four competing clubs, including X Games Club Whistler, giving Canadian fans a dedicated franchise to rally behind.
This professional redesign also brings financial security to the athletes. Competitors across the league receive salaries, health insurance stipends, and paid travel, backed by a total athlete payout of $3.3 million for the season.

Securing the event required a down-to-the-wire bidding effort. Bid lead Russell Reimer submitted the package just under the wire of a March 30 deadline, ultimately besting competing international bids to win the rights in early May.

Tourism executives project that the international showcase will deliver an approximate economic impact of $25 million for local businesses and the city’s visitor economy. That influx aligns with broader municipal goals to cement Calgary as an elite destination for major sports events.
Reynolds noted that high-profile events propel the city toward its long-term ambitions of doubling the visitor economy to $6 billion by 2035 and reinforcing its standing as a welcoming global leader.

Canada holds the second-most X Games medals in history at 366, trailing only the United States. For native competitors who grew up watching the event on television, hosting a home-snow stop is a watershed moment.
Freestyle skier Brendan Mackay recalled how a podium finish at his first appearance in 2020 served as a career-defining springboard. Bringing the venue to Calgary, he noted, will profoundly influence the next generation of Canadian children watching from the stands.
