Cali residents have increased access to COVID-19 vaccines as local health officials work to ensure updated vaccinations, particularly for those at highest risk. The initiative, launched this week, aims to bolster protection against the virus and optimize the employ of available vaccine doses throughout the city.
The effort is a direct result of the commitment from the Cali District Administration, under the leadership of Mayor Alejandro Eder, to prioritize public health and safeguard the well-being of its citizens. As COVID-19 continues to circulate, health officials emphasize the importance of maintaining up-to-date vaccination status.
Expanding Vaccine Access in Cali
The Secretaría de Salud Pública Distrital de Cali is coordinating the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines through authorized vaccination centers (IPS) across the city. The focus is on ensuring that individuals complete their primary vaccination series and receive booster doses as recommended by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the Secretaría, more than 120 points are now habilitated throughout the city to administer vaccines, and a list of locations can be found here.
Priority for booster doses is being given to those who completed their last vaccine dose at least six months ago, including individuals in vulnerable populations. This aligns with current recommendations to maximize protection against evolving variants and prevent severe illness.
“Vaccination Without Barriers”
Germán Escobar Morales, Secretary of Public Health for Cali, underscored the ongoing importance of vaccination. “El covid llegó para quedarse; por eso, vacunarse sigue siendo fundamental, especialmente en adultos mayores y personas con comorbilidades. En Cali hay vacunación sin barreras,” he stated, emphasizing the city’s commitment to accessible vaccination for all.
The initiative also incorporates a “frascos abiertos” (open vial) policy, in line with Resolution 00118 issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection on January 27, 2026. This allows individuals aged 12 and older, even if not initially prioritized, to receive available doses to prevent waste and ensure efficient use of vaccine supplies.
Who is Eligible for Vaccination in Cali?
While the initial vaccination plan prioritized specific groups, the current approach aims to broaden access. According to information from the Alcaldía de Cali, the vaccine against COVID-19 is available to all residents of Cali except for:
- Children and adolescents under 16 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Individuals who have recently had COVID-19 and have not yet recovered
- Individuals with severe immunosuppression due to any cause (including uncontrolled HIV)
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has outlined a phased vaccination plan, currently focusing on healthcare workers, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. The plan includes five stages, determining vaccination order based on risk factors and age.
The Secretaría de Salud Pública emphasizes that vaccination remains a critical tool in preventing severe illness, reducing hospitalizations, and protecting lives, particularly among those most vulnerable. It also strengthens the city’s healthcare system and minimizes the overall impact of the virus on the community.
Staying Informed and Getting Vaccinated
The Secretaría de Salud Pública encourages all residents to stay informed about their vaccination status and to visit one of the more than 120 vaccination points throughout the city. The city is actively updating its international vaccination certificate format for yellow fever, a related public health concern.
As the city continues to recover and prioritize the health of its residents, the vaccination campaign represents a key step in building a more resilient and protected community. The administration’s slogan, “¡Vacúnate! Por ti, por mí, por todos,” underscores the collective responsibility in safeguarding public health.
The next update regarding the vaccination campaign is expected in early March, when officials will assess coverage rates and adjust strategies as needed. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and provide feedback to the Secretaría de Salud Pública to support improve the vaccination process.
