“Gender ideology, today, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations,” Pope Francis said in an interview with Argentina’s La Nacion newspaper.
“Why is it dangerous? Because it obscures the differences and values of men and women,” he explained as quoted from RTSunday (12/3/2023).
The Pope has repeatedly spoken out against gender theory over the years, even as he emphasized the need to welcome and provide pastoral care for transgender people. For example, she likens gender ideology to nuclear weapons and genetic manipulation, and she warns that it is part of a “global war” against marriage and the family.
He frequently uses the term “ideological colonization” to refer to cases where influential organizations and governments have asked developing countries to accept abortion, contraception, and Western values before they can receive aid money. For example, he complained to Catholic bishops in 2016 that school children were being taught that they could choose their sex.
“Why do they teach this? Because those books are provided by people and institutions that give you money,” he said.
The Pope told La Nacion that transgenderism ignores the inevitable differences between men and women.
“All of humanity is a tension of difference,” he said.
“It grows through the tension of difference. The issue of gender dilutes differences and makes the world the same – everything is boring, everything is the same, and that goes against the human vocation,” she explained.
The Congregation for Catholic Education, the Vatican office that provides official guidance to Catholic schools, issued a document in June 2019 that dismissed gender ideology as nothing more than a confusing concept of freedom in the realm of feelings and desires. He added that such a theory seeks to “annihilate the concept of nature”.
