The storm struck with little warning, transforming from a light drizzle to a torrential downpour within minutes, according to attendees. As winds intensified,guests sprang into action,prioritizing the safety of children. “All of the parents were pushing the kids [under the tables],” recounted one guest, Caitlin Nix, who huddled with her young daughters. The children themselves reportedly described the event as a “scary wedding.”
Several men,including Jordan Baxter,worked to reinforce the structure,attempting to hold up the walls of the shed as the storm raged. “Some of the other boys were trying to board up the windows. Tables were getting shot like ping-pong balls,” Baxter told the Australian broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He added,“Next thing we know,the roof is just gone.” A moment of panic ensued when a child was briefly unaccounted for, but was quickly located safe with a caring adult.
Widespread Damage and Injuries Reported
The ferocity of the storm extended beyond the reception hall. A nearby shed was completely destroyed, leaving only it’s pillars standing. Bree Bulger, another guest, managed to leave in her car before conditions worsened, describing it as the worst storm she had seen in years. She and others worked to clear fallen trees to allow access for emergency services.
A woman in her 20s was transported to Moura Hospital with a foot injury sustained during the shed’s collapse. Authorities confirmed that while approximately 100 people were inside the building at the time, the vast majority escaped without injury.paramedics also treated a woman in her 30s from the Esk region for head and neck injuries, and assessed eight others for hail-related injuries across the state.
Historic Hall “Completely Demolished”
Allan Murray, president of the Camboon Campdraft committee, assessed the damage on Sunday, stating the historic hall had been “completely demolished.” He also noted that “numerous caravans have been written off,” but emphasized the outpouring of support from the community.
The severe weather wasn’t limited to the Banana Shire. Parts of south-east Queensland experienced hailstones up to nine centimetres in diameter. Queensland residents are bracing for further storms, still reeling from the impact of the initial weather event.
