Did you know? – Camp Flog Gnaw began in 2012 as a small showcase of Odd Future, the hip-hop collective co-founded by Tyler, The Creator. It has since grown into a major music and arts festival.

The decision to delay came just one day before the festival was set to begin. According to a statement posted by Tyler on Instagram on November 14, the choice came down to cancellation or postponement.”Due to the fact this storm became an atmospheric rain torrential downpour we had 2 choices,” he wrote. “Cancel or move to next weekend. We chose the latter. We understand this is not ideal so we will offer refunds. For everyone else we will see you next weekend.”

Who made the decision? Tyler, The Creator and his team. What happened? The Camp Flog Gnaw festival was postponed due to a severe storm predicted to bring torrential rain to Los Angeles. Why was it postponed? To avoid cancelling the event altogether and prioritize attendee safety. The postponement was announced on November 14th via Tyler’s Instagram account.

Though, the rescheduling has also resulted in changes to the lineup. Variety reported that several artists initially announced, including sombr, clairo, Tems, Men I Trust, The Alchemist, and don Toliver, will no longer be performing.

How did it end? The festival was successfully rescheduled for November 22-23, though with a revised lineup. Refunds were offered to those unable to attend the new dates. The initial storm threat subsided, allowing the event to proceed the following weekend.

The postponement arrives amidst a busy period for Tyler, The Creator. In July, he surprised fans with the release of his ninth studio album, ‘Don’t Tap The glass’, just two days after announcing it during a concert in Brooklyn. The album received a four-star rating from NME, with critics noting a shift in Tyler’s artistic approach. The review described the album as shedding “the cinematic sprawl and narrative pathos of last year’s ‘Chromakopia’,” and embracing a more self-contained aesthetic, “encased in a clear Perspex chamber like a collector’s action figure.” A clean version of the album was also released shortly after its initial debut, responding to a fan request. ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’ follows ‘Chromakopia’, which landed at number 44 on NME’s best albums of 2024 list.

Reader question: – Do you think festival lineups are frequently enough impacted by rescheduling? What factors beyond weather might cause artists to drop out?

Tyler’s musical prowess was also on display in May, when he delivered a five-star performance in London.NME’s review lauded his “masterclass in fearless reinvention,” highlighting his ability to seamlessly transition through different eras of his career, from the raw energy of ‘Goblin’ to the vibrant complexity of ‘Chromakopia’. The artist himself recently revealed that ‘Chromakopia’ was initially intended to be his “last album for a very long time.”
