On September 9, 2023, the Cheetahs of Benin play their last qualifying match for CAN 2023. National coach Gernot Rohr unveiled this August 31 a list of 25 footballers to deliver the revenge match against the Mambas of Mozambique in Maputo.

For the match of the sixth and last day of the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2023) qualifiers which will be played from January 13 to February 11, 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire, Gernot Rohr called several young footballers. “There are six U20 players and half a dozen local players”, indicated the Franco-German technician at a press conference.

This team of 25 players will benefit from the experience of the emblematic captain of the Cheetahs, Stéphane Sessegnon, currently without a club. “The presence of Stéphane Sessegnon is justified by the fact that he did a very thorough training program on the physical level… He had a program that allowed him to stay in shape, not to gain weight and to keep rhythm. He even made a few matches with teams, which weren’t aired”, explained Gernot Rohr. The Franco-German assures that “Stéphane is, in the absence of Khaled Adenon suspended [pour cumul de cartons jaunes]the natural leader of this young group.”

Apart from Khaled Adenon, Jordan Adéoti will not take part in the Mozambican expedition due to injury.

A final for the Cheetahs

The Benin-Mozambique poster promises to be decisive for both teams. It is a final which opposes the Beninese formation to the Mambas. Benin, which is 3rd in group L with 5 points behind Mozambique, aims to win the match in order to qualify for CAN Côte d’Ivoire 2024.

June 08, 2022 in Cotonou, the Cheetahs of Benin lost to the Mambas of Mozambique 0-1. The meeting on Saturday September 9, 2023 in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, remains a revenge match, on the Beninese side.
