Relatives of German diplomats left Tehran

Canada has warned its citizens to avoid travel to Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, raising the region’s risk assessment due to the increased threat of attacks on Israeli territory, Reuters reports, quoted by BTA.

Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said on social media late last night that Canadians in the area should consider leaving.

“With the increased risk of attacks on Israeli territory, the regional security situation remains highly volatile and could escalate without warning,” she wrote.

The government in Ottawa previously warned Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the region.

US President Joe Biden said yesterday that he expected Iran to attack Israel “sooner rather than later” and warned Tehran against taking action.

Meanwhile, relatives of employees at the German embassy in Tehran are leaving Iran today due to fears that tensions between it and Israel could escalate, DPA reported.

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry announced that security measures are currently being taken and a crisis headquarters has been convened in the department. More than 100 German citizens have registered on the ministry’s crisis preparedness list (so-called “Elephand”), a system that allows Germans abroad to be quickly informed by official representatives of the country about the current situation and to be included in potential anti-crisis measures.

On Friday, Germany’s foreign ministry urged all German citizens to leave the country and issued a travel warning, saying the security situation could suddenly and rapidly deteriorate.

Embassies of other countries also issued similar warnings after two brigadier generals and five other members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1. The Iranian leadership has repeatedly threatened to respond.
