Canberra Pipe Bomb Finding: Police Issue Public Warning
Authorities in Australia’s capital are investigating the discovery of several perhaps hazardous pipe bombs found in public areas of Canberra’s belconnen district this week.
Canberra residents are being urged to exercise extreme caution after pipe bombs were discovered along footpaths near Lake Ginninderra, between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive in the Belconnen area. ACT Policing responded to reports of the devices and confirmed the recovery of multiple items over the past two days.
Pipe bombs are illegal to manufacture, possess,or use in Australia. Penalties for these offenses can include important jail time.
The discovery has prompted a public safety proclamation, with police releasing images of the devices to aid in identification. According to a police statement, the pipe bombs are described as silver, pipe-shaped objects with screw tops, small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. The devices were first reported by members of the public walking in the area, prompting an immediate response from ACT Policing’s bomb disposal unit.
“ACT Policing is urging anyone who locates a suspicious item within the area not to touch it and immediately contact police on Triple Zero,” a spokesperson for ACT Policing stated. Authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe distance and allowing trained professionals to handle the situation.
If you encounter a suspicious device, do not attempt to move or disarm it. Your safety is paramount. Immediately contact emergency services and provide them with your exact location.
While police currently have no facts suggesting the presence of additional devices in other parts of Canberra, they are actively monitoring the situation. Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to police on 131 444. Police have increased patrols in the Belconnen area as a precautionary measure.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the origin and intent behind the placement of these potentially lethal devices. Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and appealing for anyone with information to come forward. As of today, the investigation remains active, with no arrests made. The recovered devices are undergoing forensic analysis to determine their composition and potential origin. The public’s cooperation in remaining vigilant and reporting any unusual activity is crucial to ensuring the safety of the Canberra community.
