Candace Cameron Bure: Backlash & ‘Misunderstood’ Marriage Comments

Candace Cameron Bure Doubles Down: “I Want to Be on God’s Side of History”

The actress and television personality is standing firm on her controversial stances, asserting she has no regrets despite facing significant backlash and professional consequences.

Candace Cameron Bure is addressing the fallout from her departure from Hallmark and subsequent alignment with Great American Family, a network she positioned as prioritizing “traditional marriage” and “faith programming.” The move, which effectively signaled a rejection of LGBTQ+ representation, sparked widespread criticism in 2022, including direct condemnation from figures like JoJo Siwa and Hilarie Burton, and even created friction with former Full House co-star Jodie Sweetin. Now, in a new interview with Us Weekly published on Wednesday, Bure maintains she is simply “living true to me.”

A Shift in Networks, A Firming of Beliefs

Bure’s move to Great American Family as chief creative officer was immediately met with scrutiny. She articulated a vision for the network centered on conservative values, explicitly stating its intention to “keep traditional marriage at the core” and actively “promote faith programming.” This translated, critics argued, to a deliberate exclusion of LGBTQ+ storylines and characters. Accusations also surfaced alleging Bure attempted to remove a queer character from the popular reboot, Fuller House.

The resulting public outcry led to lost brand partnerships and contract terminations, but Bure appears unfazed. She frames her actions as an unwavering commitment to her religious beliefs, stating, “The Bible says to go out into the world and share the good news with others, to share the gospel.” She continued, “To deny that in any part of my life would be denying the very thing that I’m so appreciative of, which is Jesus. I cannot separate those two things, and so I walk boldly in that.”

“Misunderstood” Intentions and the Blame Game

Despite the clear implications of her statements and actions, Bure claims she feels “misunderstood.” She acknowledges that certain narratives have been damaging, stating, “Headlines and narratives have been written that are simply not truthful, and those things hurt because people believe them.” However, she quickly deflects blame, pointing to the pitfalls of public interviews and the prevalence of “clickbait headlines.”

“I think that clickbait headlines are awful… and yet, we’re in a business where that’s what happens, so we take the risk every time we do an interview,” she explained. She broadened the scope of this risk, asserting it applies to anyone in the public eye – “whether you’re an actor, a musician, a business owner, a politician.”

Prioritizing Divine Approval

Bure’s commitment to her faith extends to a seeming disregard for public opinion. She explicitly stated her desire to be “on God’s side of history,” even if it means being perceived as “archaic” or “not on the right side of history” by contemporary standards. “God’s word never changes, therefore, I don’t want to change. If God doesn’t, I don’t want to,” she affirmed.

This unwavering faith also informs her perspective on “cancel culture.” While acknowledging she has been “dropped from contracts and… lost brand partnerships,” Bure frames herself as a resilient fighter who has “found her people” – those who align with her values.

An Audience of One

Ultimately, Bure revealed her primary concern isn’t earthly approval, but divine judgment. “I have an audience of one, and that’s God,” she stated. “I’m going to face a holy God. When I die, I’m not going to stand before that person in the comments who doesn’t like me, so I’m more worried about my eternal life.”

This perspective underscores a fundamental disconnect: Bure appears more concerned with her standing in the eyes of God than with the real-world impact of her choices on LGBTQ+ individuals and communities. Unsurprisingly, no apology or clarification is forthcoming. She maintains that “the people who know me well know my heart,” and that is sufficient.
