Kickboxer Fights On After Devastating loss, Dedicates victory to Late Grandfather
A tragic turn of events on the eve of his first competitive fight fueled Merdijan Neziri to a poignant victory, dedicating his performance to the memory of his grandfather. The Bad Cannstatt-based athlete channeled his grief into unwavering determination, securing a points win just hours after learning of his grandfather’s sudden passing.
On October 3rd, German Unity Day, Neziri shared a quiet moment with his 77-year-old grandfather, enjoying coffee and conversation before his kickboxing debut. As they said goodbye, the elder man offered a simple, yet powerful, encouragement: “You will win.” The two, both Albanian immigrants residing in Cannstatt, shook hands – a farewell neither knew would be their last.
The following day brought unimaginable heartbreak. After briefly seeing his grandfather at the weigh-in, Neziri returned home to find ambulances outside his residence. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, his grandfather succumbed to an unexpected illness. “Death came out of nowhere for us,” Neziri recounted. Tho his grandfather had experienced vision loss following a stroke eight years prior, his overall health had been stable.
Despite his profound grief – going without food and overwhelmed with tears – Neziri resolved to honor his promise. He had spent eight intensive weeks preparing for the fight, training twice daily at a facility in Waiblingen and a local fitness studio.A trained structural construction worker, Neziri had temporarily put his career on hold to focus on martial arts, a pursuit initially discouraged by his grandfather. “But I told him that I wanted to box, no matter what others said. Since then he has always supported me,” Neziri explained. He had even envisioned a celebratory group photo with his grandfather after the fight.
Rather, Neziri entered the duel against Jurica Markovic carrying a large poster bearing his grandfather’s image. A moment of silence was observed in the arena before the bout, which took place in the up to 80-kilogram weight class. “Up to that point I wasn’t excited at all, but when the whole hall became quiet and quiet, my heart started beating violently,” the young martial artist said.
After three grueling rounds, Neziri emerged victorious by points. Overcome with emotion, he rushed from the “cage” in tears, dedicating his triumph to his grandfather, who will be laid to rest in his hometown in North Macedonia.
Now, neziri is focused on building a professional career, having already secured his first sponsorship.”I know that if I want to achieve something, I have to give 200 percent every day,” he stated. He is slated to compete again at his training center’s event at the end of january, continuing to fight with his grandfather’s memory as his driving force.
