Canterbury Thunderstorm Warning Lifted, But Risk Remains

A severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Canterbury, New zealand, has been lifted, but residents are still urged to exercise caution as a moderate risk of further storms persists. MetService officials lifted the warning for the Christchurch and Selwyn areas shortly before 3:00 PM local time after detecting thunderstorms near Darfield, Oxford, Kirwee, Charing Cross, and Greendale.

Initial Storms Bring Heavy Rain and Hail

The initial wave of thunderstorms was accompanied by very heavy rain and large hail, prompting concerns about potential flooding and damage.Images circulated online, including photographs of hail falling in Christchurch at 2:30 PM, showcasing the intensity of the weather event. Residents are encouraged to share their own photos and videos with news outlets at [email protected].

Did you know? – New Zealand experiences an average of over 200 thunderstorms annually, with the west Coast of the South Island being particularly prone to lightning strikes.

Potential for Flash Flooding and Hazardous Driving

Forecasters warned that the heavy rainfall could lead to surface and/or flash flooding in streams, gullies, and urban areas, creating extremely hazardous driving conditions. Additionally, the large hail posed a important threat to agriculture, with potential for “significant damage” to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses, and vehicles.

Lingering Threat and Regional variations

A MetService forecaster, Gerard Bellan, explained to 1News that thunderstorms had already impacted Timaru earlier in the day, resulting in “some large hail” in that region. He indicated a “moderate risk” of thunderstorms extending as far north as Christchurch, possibly bringing rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hour and hail up to 10-20cm in diameter. Christchurch residents reported witnessing large hail and lightning strikes from their homes.

“These systems are sort of tracking up the coast, sort of towards the north-east or in the south-west direction,” Bellan stated. “There are some quite big shower clouds showing up on our radar to the west of Christchurch,” adding that a continued risk of thunderstorms and hail remained for the city. He strongly urged drivers to adjust their behavior to the conditions, emphasizing that low visibility could make driving “extremely hazardous.”

Pro tip: – If driving during a thunderstorm, pull over to a safe location away from trees and power lines. Turn on hazard lights and wait for the storm to pass.

Storm Expected to Clear

despite the ongoing risk, Bellan offered some “good news,” predicting that the storm system would begin to clear into the evening.
