The two main national unions of nurses in Cape Verde, SINDEF and SNETS, will meet at the beginning of next week to outline new forms of struggle, in their words, after the deadline, on May 18, given to the Ministry of Health for a dialogue with a view to resolving a number of issues that affect the class.

They admit to going ahead with a demonstration or strike, while the Ministry of Health prepares responses to the claims

The list of claims includes the improvement of the salary scale, specialized training, retirement age limit, subsidy and/or risk insurance and reclassification of professionals who completed the degree.

The president of SINDEF explains that the two unions held a meeting with the Minister of Health in February, with Filomena Gonçalves asking them to draw up a notebook with the points of claim.

“She asked us to list all the outstanding issues, but then no one told us anything else… if the Ministry does not respond, we will have to move on to other forms of struggle… which could include demonstrations and/or strikes”, says José Elídio Lopes Sanches .

Although it has no union function, the president of the newly created Order of Nurses says that the referred structure is also ready to help in the search for better mechanisms to solve problems.

Aniceto Santos adds that he sent a letter asking for a review of the nursing career and a response to the reclassification of nurses who completed the degree.

“We are also concerned about this and we have already asked the Ministry to resolve pending issues, including the issue of colleagues who have completed their degree who, according to their careers, should make the automatic transition” stresses Santos.

That official claims that the Ministry responded by saying that the matter is in progress and should only be resolved in the 2023 State Budget.

The Voice of America tried to speak with the Minister of Health, but telephone contacts had no effect.

Together with the minister’s press office, we learned that the Ministry is preparing a document to be sent this Thursday, 18th, to the two national unions of nurses.
