Campo Grande will have another 112 monitoring cameras in the central quadrangle and in some nearby neighborhoods, such as Vila Glória and São Francisco. The news is that 10 of them will work with facial and license plate recognition technology, which promises to help the courts in identifying criminals on the streets.
According to the secretary of Sesdes (Security and Social Defense), Anderson Gonzaga, the installation of the cameras has already started and the installation is expected to be completed by the end of May.
Some points that will have cameras, as explained by the secretary, are 14 de Julho and Rui Barbosa streets, in addition to Rachid Neder and Eduardo Elias Zahran avenues, and the area around the old bus station. “These locations were chosen due to the large flow of people”, he explains. The location of the facial recognition cameras was kept confidential.
The Sesdes secretary also explains that there will be a database sharing partnership between the GCM (Metropolitan Civil Guard) and the State’s police forces. “The cameras are from the GCM monitoring center, but we are expected to create an agreement with the Military and Civil Police.”
However, the procedure for executing arrest warrants and arrests in the act will still be studied by the secretariat. “We are still going to make adjustments regarding prison protocol,” explained Anderson.
Since 2019, as reported by Campo Grande News, the implementation of facial recognition technology has been the subject of discussion in the Capital. However, only five years later, the project began to take shape. “I don’t know why it took so long, because it wasn’t the time of my management. It’s just that this recent installation is linked to the reform of the central region”, reiterates the secretary of Sesdes.
