Current issues such as male violence or the repression of sexual impulses, but also proposals that invite you to re-read the past and reflect on family or collective memory will focus Mirades’23, the Baix Empordà Photography Festival. The show organized biannually by Photo Torroella will be held fromMarch 24 to April 23 a Torroella de Montgríthe Bisbal d’Empordà, Palafrugell and Gironaand will present the photographic projects of seventeen artists, all chosen through a public call.
With a strong female presence, the selection was made by the jury made up of photographers Rita Puig-Serra, David Salcedo and Arnau Rovira, among 156 proposals receivedthe majority coming from Catalonia (89) and Spain (55), but also from the rest of Europe (5) and South America (7).
Torroella de Montgrí it is the nerve center of the appointment and will host ten of the seventeen scheduled exhibitions. At the Cloister of the Augustinian ConventPaco Poyato will present the invisible wallwhere it traces the footprint of the old Berlin Wall and Mar Alcalá will take you there Eat and shut upon animal abuse, while in the Chapel of Sant Antoni, Elisa Miralles and Lurdes R. Basoli will exhibit there #serlobas, a collaborative project that aims to expand the body imagination of women. At the Mascort Foundation, you can see the work of Anna Lofi on the dry stone constructions of the island of Menorca, Paredadors and quarries, in danger of extinction.
Al Museum of the Mediterraneanthe projects of Paula Artés on the control of the state to the citizens will be exhibited; cubilin which Sergi Batlle has traced the recent family landscape of his ancestors; Kenya, Alma by Claudia Herrán, about three women victims of sexist violence and that of the Danish Lisa Pram A site of her own, where he reflects on the random and unpredictable since the birth of his daughter with a rare syndrome. Pram, in addition, is behind the documentary together with the director Maria Ripoll chromosome 5a documentary film that will be screened at Cinema Montgrí on April 21.
Al Palau Solterraheadquarters of the Vila Casas Foundation, you can see the work of the Chilean photographer Inés Molina Navea, Minimal exercises for a winter gardenwinner of Foto Torroella’s VIII Photography Grant, and in which he seeks to relate the work of art to the historical event and finally, in the old Green Garage, Vicente Paredes will exhibit there SuperEuskadi, a photographic essay with large-format work, about the identity and idiosyncrasy of the Basque Country.
To the Bisbal d’Empordà, the festival will be installed in the Palau Castle. The Mexican Cristóbal Ascencio Ramos will lead there flowers die twice, where he reflects on the suicide of his gardener father; Raquel Bravo Iglesias will present there Mato Grosso, a post-memoir work that arises from the discovery of his father’s photographic archive; Julieta Averbuj will be present with The cupcake gamein which he also starts from the paternal figure and, finally, Javier Talavera, will show Almudenaa photographic work on the tombstones of the cemetery of the same name.
A the library of Palafrugellphotographer Laura San Segundo reflects on the small differences caused by the passage of time with One can only give examples of it, and in the cloister of the La Mercè Cultural Center in Girona you can see two more exhibitions: Los irrepressibles, by the Mexican George Ramos, a documentary project about repressed sexual impulses and the bride’s garter by Majorcan Robert Hernández Yustos, a work on the custom of brides and the garter belt they wear on their wedding day.
The inauguration of Mirades’23 will take place on March 24 (6 p.m.) at the Museu de la Mediterrània. The following day, Saturday 25, there will be presentations of the exhibitions by their authors, in the morning in Torroella, and in the afternoon, in Bisbal.
Besides, on April 15, Plaça de la Vila de Torroella will host the Photography Fair, with the meeting of photography publishers and a fair of author photographs and the book Waiting Game IllK, by the Catalan documentary photographer Txema Salvans, will also be presented at the headquarters of the Vila-Casas Foundation.
