Engineers have designed a system that detects the speed of vehicles traveling on the same road. The system, based on an innovative algorithm, and which alerts in real time of possible dangers, is integrated into a single camera on board the car, in a more accessible way and at a lower cost.

This innovation is the work of engineers from the ‘ICAI’ group at the School of Computing at the University of Malaga (UMA) in Spain.

The system uses computer vision.

Integrated into a single camera with the on-board computers, it generates alerts whenever another vehicle is approaching at a dangerous speed.

Likewise, the system designed at the UMA estimates the speed of several vehicles simultaneously and, since it consists of a single sensor, it is integrated more easily and more economically.

The professor of the Department of Languages and Computer Sciences Ezequiel López Rubio, one of those responsible for this development, points out that improving the safety of vehicles is the final objective of this research, which is part of a broader project on video surveillance for traffic. Thus, autonomous driving and driver assistance are other possible applications.

“There were already driving systems for this type of purpose, the novelty of this work is being able to integrate them into a single camera, reducing complexity and costs and, furthermore, it does not require the calibration process,” explains López Rubio.

Alternative system

This system becomes an alternative to the usual ones, since it allows its use in small vehicles in which several cameras could not be installed, such as motorcycles, bicycles or electric scooters.

Although, at the moment, it has not been integrated into any vehicle, reaching the business community is one of the medium-long term objectives of this scientific team that is currently continuing to work on improving the algorithm.

The researchers Iván García, Jorge García, Rafael Marcos Luque and Enrique Domínguez are the other members of the ‘ICAI’ group – Computational Intelligence and Image Analysis – who have participated in the study. Daniel Medina, from the German Aerospace Center, is another of the authors.

López Rubio and his colleagues present the technical details of the system in the academic journal Neurocomputing, under the title “Detection of dangerously approaching vehicles over onboard cameras by speed estimation from apparent size.” (Source: UMA)
