Carle Health Implements Visitor Restrictions Amid Rising Respiratory Illnesses in Illinois
Amid a surge in respiratory illnesses across Central and Southeastern Illinois, Carle Health has enacted temporary visitor restrictions at all its facilities, including Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. The health system’s move aims to curb the spread of infections like RSV, influenza, and COVID-19.
Carle Health officials reported a consistent increase in respiratory illness rates over recent weeks, prompting the precautionary measures. The restrictions, effective immediately, limit patient rooms to a maximum of two visitors at any given time. Additionally, individuals under the age of 18 are prohibited from visiting patients.
“Carle Health continuously monitors the rate of RSV, flu, COVID-19 and other infections in the areas we serve and have seen a steady incline over the past weeks,” stated Dr. Robert Healy, Carle Health Quality, Patient Safety and Patient Experience chief associate medical director. “Based on this data and the recommendations of IDPH [Illinois Department of Public Health] and CDC [Centers for Disease Control], taking additional, temporary precautions in our care facilities is necessary to reduce the spread of illness.”
The health system is also strongly advising anyone experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness – such as coughing, sneezing, or fever – to wear a mask while visiting any Carle Health facility. This recommendation aligns with guidance from public health organizations to minimize transmission.
Beyond visitor protocols, Carle Health staff are implementing additional measures to mitigate the spread of infection. According to a company release, these steps have proven effective in preventing infections and accelerating patient recovery in the past.
The implementation of these restrictions underscores the ongoing challenges posed by respiratory viruses, even as the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided. Public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination, hygiene practices, and responsible behavior to protect vulnerable populations.
Carle Health will continue to monitor infection rates and adjust its visitor policies as needed, prioritizing the safety of both patients and staff.
