INEGI presents data on the child population

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has revealed shocking figures on the child population in Mexico, just in time for the celebration of Children’s Day.

Based on the National Survey of the Care System (ENASIC) 2022, crucial data has been collected that sheds light on the needs and conditions of boys and girls from 0 to 17 years of age in the country.

According to the results of the survey, it is estimated that around 36.3 million people between 0 and 17 years of age reside in Mexico, which represents approximately 28.1 percent of the total population.

Of this group, more than half are boys, 51.8 percent, while 48.2 percent are girls.

It is important to note that, within this population, about 10.5 million are under 6 years old, while approximately 25.7 million are in the age range of 6 to 17 years.

ENASIC 2022 also revealed significant data on the care needs of this population.

It was found that practically all boys and girls under 6 years of age, specifically 97.5 percent, require care, and the vast majority, 99.0 percent, receive some type of care.

For the group from 6 to 17 years old, 98.7 percent need care, but only 79.4 percent receive it. Furthermore, it was observed that girls receive more care than boys in this group.

Regarding the main caregivers, it stands out that 83.2 percent of boys and girls from 0 to 17 years old are cared for mainly by their mothers, followed by grandmothers (6.7 percent) and other people such as fathers, uncles or grandparents ( 10.1 percent).

However, in the 6 to 17 year old group, a higher percentage of other caregivers is observed, such as parents, grandparents, uncles, etc., compared to the 0 to 5 year old group.

These data provide a detailed view of the reality of the child population in Mexico and highlight the importance of understanding and addressing their care needs effectively.
